The flame produced by recca:
KARYU
Recca is one of the descendents of the Hokage Flame masters. He has the ability to produce Flame from his hands. This is his birthright, not a weapon. There are many different types of flame, the Ryu being the strongest of them all (aside from the Holy Flame, the Phoenix). Recca has eight Ryu living within him, but they are not ordinary Ryu: they are the Karyu (Flame Dragons), the spirits of deceased Flame Masters (The Flame Masters who were not able to protect the ones they love in the time they are still alive), each one having its own personality and special power. They live within Recca, but cannot be forced to obey his orders. First they must be tamed. As each Karyu allows Recca to become its master, a tattoo of that dragon's name appears on Recca's upper arm. In order to seal his ultimate power, Recca wears a tekkou, or protective armband. When he removes this armband and calls his flame, the dragons are basically free to emerge and wreak havoc. (The first time he removes the tekkou, the Karyu almost kill him. Well that only happened the time Recca was still not able to tame those Karyu).
NADARE
Nadare is the first Karyu to help Recca. She is a female dragon, and her main power is shooting fireballs in rapid succession. Certainly the most kindly of the dragons, and the least arrogant, Recca is able to tame her first during his training before the Ura Butou Satsujin. Nadare is almost eager to assist Recca (which cannot be said for any of the other dragons). Her human form is that of a young woman with ponytail, and even during the second taming, Recca is able to gain her back quickly.
SAIHA
Saiha is the second Karyu to be tamed by Recca. Rather than shooting flame or burning an opponent, his specialty is a blade. When called, Saiha creates a curved blade made of fire which protrudes from Recca's arm. He is able to use this like a sword. Despite being a fairly arrogant dragon, Recca is able to tame Saiha during his training for the Ura Butou Satsujin as well (the others do not obey until during the tournament). The flame blade is a handy weapon, and Recca uses it often when fighting opponents with swords.
HOMURA
Homura is the third dragon that obeys Recca's commands. He shoots crooked flames that can zigzag and catch an opponent off-guard. His power is like that of a whip made of fire. Homura is obtained during the Ura Butou Satsujin tournament during the fight with Kukai of Kuu team. And its human form is a man with a baldhead.
SETSUNA
Setsuna is a particularly angry and vengeful dragon. It is also known as the dragon with no eyes or the blind dragon. It usually keeps his eyes closed. However, if he opens them and someone looks into his eye, he will burn them to death. Setsuna is obtained by Recca after being stolen by Genjurou. When Genjurou tries to command him, Setsuna opens his eye and burns the man. He then returns to Recca's arm and the tattoo appears. His human form is a man with many eyes.
MADOKA
Madoka is the only Karyu that specializes in defense and not attack. Madoka has the ability to create an impenetrable shield of flame which can be used to proctect the master, or anything else (ie. the entire audience of the Ura Butou Satsujin). He is only used three times during the tournament, one of which being a complete surprise to Recca. However, he is a valuable asset to Recca's Karyu. Because Recca prefers never to kill his opponents, he even uses Madoka to protect Uruha-member Neon from a deadly fall.
RUI
Rui is the next dragon that obeys Recca. However, she loves riddles, so before she will help him, she makes him answer her puzzle. Rui is an illusion Karyu, and she has the ability to create an imaginary scene and trap an opponent in it. Whatever her Flame Master thinks up, she can make into an illusion. Recca obtains Rui while fighting Kashmaru, a powerful ninja with a madougu that allows him to imitate the powers of a true flame master. However, he can only copy the Karyu he has seen already, so when Rui appears, he is defeated.
KOKUU
Although Recca once described its flames as awesome, no one really knows what powers it possesses. Somehow, it managed to come out of Recca's body a day before the final round of the Ura Butou Satsujin to give the Hokage team advice. It takes the form of a perverted old man with an injured eye who likes Fuuko. He helps the Hokage Team members, giving Domon a madougu and telling Kaoru of the Kougon Anki's sixth form. Koku takes the Karyu from Recca and tells him he must defeat their human forms to regain them. Koku is the second strongest Karyu. His power is to create a wall of flame that can either attack enemies or defend the Flame Master.
RESSHIN
Resshin is the eighth and most powerful Karyu. He is also the spirit of Recca's father. However, because Recca and Kurei are both his sons, Resshin refuses to assist Recca in the fight between his brother Kurei. However, he does help them when they fight Mori Kouran's clone of Kurei. Resshin's specific power is unknown. Recca never manages to tame him during the anime. The first time Recca releases his sealed power though, Resshin offers to help him once in return for his arm. After helping Recca though, Resshin is amused by him and tells him the Karyu will remain in his arm and watch.
